Steel structure modelling with weight-based take-offSteel frames from lines, with a take-off accurate to the kilogram
SteelGenius Pro draws standard European and American steel sections from lines, cuts and fits the ends, puts base plates under the columns and produces a weight-based material and price list. The goal is to quote a portal-frame building, a canopy or a carport from the SketchUp model in minutes.
Planned features
This is what we are planning for the first release. Details may still change during development and testing.
Steel from edges
A line frame becomes a steel frame in one step: vertical lines become columns, horizontal ones beams, sloping ones rafters or bracing. You can also draw between two points and place columns on points.
Two section libraries
European sections to EN 10365 and EN 10219-2, American ones from the AISC database. Weight always comes from the table; the steel grade is a label and a price key.
Editing
Swap profiles, step up or down within a family, rotate by 90°, mirror, and choose from nine insertion points. End cuts and base plates are rebuilt after a profile change.
End cuts
Square, angled (with two angles), mitred between two members and cut to another member, with a gap. The cut length and the saw angles go into the list as well.
Base plates
Under the selected columns with one click: 2–8 anchor bolts, optional stiffeners, grout, and the same as a cap plate on top of the column.
Material list and price
Weight per section and per plate, gross and net, paint area, price per kilogram, tonne or pound, surface treatment. Piece numbering, totals by section and steel grade, plate and bolt lists, CSV and print.
Later development rounds
- Coping to the main member
- More sections: HEM, IPN, UPE, angles, flats; USA: C, MC, L, Pipe; custom profiles and CSV import
- End plate splices, gusset plates, repetition along a grid
- Stock length optimisation, Excel export, IFC classification
- Railing and stair frames, bolted connections, shop drawings
Important: SteelGenius Pro does not do structural design: the user chooses the section. The first version does not produce shop drawings.
